I believe that a person’s individuality is formed by our memories, especially unconscious memories, because they are inaccessible to the consciousness yet influence judgments, emotions, or behavior. I also believe that our past experience which is stored in the unconsciousness, powerfully influences our emotions, motives, and decisions in the present and future. My art is about the freedom of thought, opinion, perception, and emotions. The freedom of expression is important for me to feel human and to live within a distinct identity.
I regard my art as the reconstruction and composition of forms, lines, and perspectives, that link into a narrative. I want to give my audience the freedom to respond to my artwork based on their own thoughts, opinions, perceptions, and emotions. They should not seek answers in my art. I want them to suspend their realities to accept that there is no conclusion, absolute truth, right or wrong, standard, or stigma in the painting. I believe that truth is made by the individual and each person is different. As an artist, I am currently on a journey in which surrealism is my guide as the art-creation process enables the unconscious part of my being to express itself.
I often feature nature because it teaches me about how to exist as part of a greater universe. Today nature and people are detached. People utilize nature merely to fulfill their own human needs as an advance towards our own selfish human ambition and idea manifestation. Nature is being distorted and perverted by our own humanity, whether for survival or vanity. As a response to today’s reality, where we are quickly detaching ourselves from our most traditional relationships with nature due to technological progress; my artwork functions as a paradox that explores the unnatural as natural, and the natural as unnatural; where reality and fantasy merge to help bring forth a new perception.
The use of non-realistic, mystical, and mythical subjects in my work helps me exert an abstraction that deepens the fantasy for a viewer to penetrate. I try to present an experience of reality by vividly invoking a relatable hallucination which lends itself to be interpreted as surreal. With the use of the artwork as the gateway, it is my intention to push the obstacle of an affirmed reality out of the audience’s point of view and let them explore deeper into the realm of personal reflection; with my aim to reveal one’s own current understanding and relationship with nature.
Straddling the dualities of reality and fantasy Riandy Karuniawan is an artist that masterfully shows us the multiple layers of psychedelic and fantasy art. Karuniawan is able to create a porthole into alternative realms and curious landscapes that transport the viewer into a hallucinogenic state of mind.
The energies between natural life forms and technology are brought to life as he transcends between alien landscapes veiled in vivid auras crawling with beasts juxtapozed with dream like sci-fi elements. Karuniawan’s preoccupation with unlocking the unconscious mind is reflected in his style. With his trademark luminous colour palette and skillful blending, his traditional oil painting technique draws the eye to the minute canvas details. Viewers are able to enjoy his works as whole or in portions.
Drawing inspiration from his childhood experiences and natural phenomena while using Arik Roper, Moebius, Dali and Roger Dean as springboards, Karuniawan style seeps between the parallel dimensions of surrealism and fantasy.
“Sathar: Vol 1: Past” marks the coming of age of one of Indonesia’s young contemporary fantasy painters.
“Riandy is a truly talented visionary. His work is a window into stunning lands of brilliant visual feasts and psychedelic color that only a master of fantasy can achieve.” - Arik Roper
